ABOUT US
As the Executive Director of the Madera Rescue Mission I am so excited to see the annual "Second Wind" 5K and Kids Mini Sprint, come together with such a show of community. This collaboration between the Madera Rescue Mission and the Madera County Food Bank is one that will bless both agencies incredibly.
Just some facts you may not know: We at the Mission have a 12-month in-patient recovery program that's serving more than 25 clients and experiencing victories, with graduations ongoing. Perhaps you didn't know that your Madera Mission serves 51,000 meals a year. I'll bet you didn't know that we house overnight well over 100+ men, women and children guests that receive a hot shower and a change of clothes each night as needed. Bottom line, we are your Mission, and as such we need your support, given our funding is primarily derived by faithful support partners that contribute monthly on a number of levels including financially.
This race and your involvement in it will go to support a pit stop for some, while providing others an opportunity to cross the finish line as a winner who's conquered a debilitating addiction. I personally thank you for taking part in what I'm praying will be an annual event that only grows, and in so doing reaches more people.
God's richest blessings,
Jesse Chavez
Executive Director
As the Executive Director of the Madera County Food Bank, I am very excited to partner with the Madera Rescue Mission to host the annual "Second Wind" 5K and Kids Mini Sprint. We are bringing Madera’s own premier run/walk to town! I have lived in Madera for over 30 years and have never seen so many runners taking to our streets as I have in the past few years. Now we are creating an event that will bring all the runners and walkers together for a great cause.
I would like to take this time to tell you a little about what the Madera Food Bank does and provides. For starters, we service all of Madera County, providing food for not only Madera, but Chowchilla, Fairmead, Raymond, Coarsegold, Oakhurst and North Fork. We have a total of 25 distribution sites throughout the county. We manage six different programs, some of them seasonal and some of them just for senior citizens in our county. There are a variety of opportunities for people 18 and older to receive food. Through the programs we provide food to more than 20,000 individuals a month and give out more than 100,000 pounds of food each month in the county. The Madera Food Bank needs your support in all areas: financially, food donations, volunteering and word of mouth. We are so thankful for whatever area your heart encourages you to give.
The Second Wind 5K is not only an opportunity for the Madera County Food Bank and the Madera Rescue Mission to unite, but also for you as a community to help us fight hunger and addiction and restore our community—one family at a time.

Executive Director

Yes, parking is free. We encourage participants and spectators to park in Lot B, the north side of the fairgrounds. Overflow parking will be in Lot C.
Can I participate with a stroller?
Yes, but those with strollers must line up behind the other participants at the race start so faster runners are not tripped by the strollers. FYI, the course has a small portion over loose gravel and may slow you down a bit...if you are aiming to win!
Can I bring my kids?
Yes! We encourage children to participate by registering for the 5K, all ages are welcome. Children 2-10 may register for the “Kids Mini Sprint”, a one lap race around Madera Speedway track, 1/3 mile. Kids Mini Sprint participants will receive all race amenities.

Yes! Runners and walkers are encouraged. If you know you will be walking some or all of the 3.1-mile course, we ask that you line up near the back at the starting line so you don't get trampled by faster runners.
What if I'm too slow?
The course will be open for 1 hour and 15 minutes, allowing for a pace of 24 minutes per mile. If you do not reach the Quarter Midget Track by 9:30 a.m. you will be diverted to the finish line, cutting nearly 1/2 mile from the course. You can make it!

No. Consistent with all races, the Second Wind 5K will not offer a refund for race entry fees.

No. We encourage spectators to come and cheer on our runners and walkers!

Is there an age limit?
No! We encourage runners and walkers of all ages. Participants must pay the registration fee.

Will there be aid stations on the course?
There will be one "Pit Stop" near the halfway point on the course where volunteers will hand out water.
Anyone in need of first aid can notify a Course Monitor/ Traffic Controller or other volunteer.
Can I listen to music with headphones while I run?
It's discouraged. There will be many participants in a relatively small space, and runners will run along a road that will only be partially closed to traffic. We want participants to be aware of their surroundings. There will also be a live band, a marching band, and a DJ along the course to provide music and motivation!
Is there a bag check available?
No. Please leave belongings with friends/family who will be watching the race, or locked securely in your vehicle's trunk.
