  • ABOUT US

As the Executive Director of the Madera Rescue Mission I am so excited to see the fourth running of "Second Wind" 5K and Kids Mini Sprint, come together with such a show of community. This collaboration between the Madera Rescue Mission and the Madera County Food Bank is one that will bless both agencies incredibly.

Just some facts you may not know: We at the Mission have a 12-month in-patient recovery program that's serving more than 25 clients and experiencing victories, with graduations ongoing. Perhaps you didn't know that your Madera Mission served over 51,000 meals in 2017. I'll bet you didn't know that we house overnight well over 100+ men, women and children guests that receive a hot shower and a change of clothes each night as needed. Bottom line, we are your Mission, and as such we need your support, given our funding is primarily derived by faithful support partners that contribute monthly on a number of levels including financially.

This race and your involvement in it will go to support a pit stop for some, while providing others an opportunity to cross the finish line as a winner who's conquered a debilitating addiction. I personally thank you for taking part in what I'm praying will be an annual event that only grows, and in so doing reaches more people.

    God's richest blessings,

    Pastor Mike Unger

    Executive Director

    Madera Rescue Mission

As the Executive Director of the Madera County Food Bank, I am very excited to partner with the Madera Rescue Mission to host the fourth running of "Second Wind" 5K and Kids Mini Sprint. We are bringing Madera’s own premier run/walk to town! I have lived in Madera for 30 years and have never seen so many runners taking to our streets as I have in the past five years. Now we are creating an event that will bring all the runners and walkers together for a great cause.

I would like to take this time to tell you a little about what the Madera Food Bank does and provides. For starters, we service all of Madera County, providing food for not only Madera, but Chowchilla, Fairmead, Raymond, Coarsegold, Oakhurst and North Fork. We have a total of 25 distribution sites throughout the county. We manage six different programs, some of them seasonal and some of them just for senior citizens in our county. There are a variety of opportunities for people 18 and older to receive food. Through the programs we provide food to more than 20,000 individuals a month and give out more than 100,000 pounds of food each month in the county. The Madera Food Bank needs your support in all areas: financially, food donations, volunteering and word of mouth. We are so thankful for whatever area your heart encourages you to give.

The Second Wind 5K is not only an opportunity for the Madera County Food Bank and the Madera Rescue Mission to unite, but also for you as a community to help us fight hunger and addiction and restore our community—one family at a time.

  • FAQ

ANY QUESTIONS NOT MENTIONED, CONTACT US!

    When does registration end?

    Pre-registration online will end March 23rd, 2017.

Late registration will be allowed Race Day from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Late registrants may not receive Madera Speedway
tickets and are not guaranteed a t-shirt.

What do I get for registering?

Participants will receive an event t-shirt, a Madera Speedway event ticket, a bib with a timing chip, water on the course, and water and snacks in Victory Circle on the infield of the Madera Speedway.

    Is the race timed?

Yes. Talley Race Timing will record all registered participant times using timing chips on each participant's bib. Your time will start when you step across the strip on the floor at the starting line, and end when you cross the strip again at the finish line.

    Are there prizes?

Top male and female overall winner will receive a trophy. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 females and top 3 males in each age division: under 10, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and up. The awards ceremony will begin at 8:45 a.m. If you must leave and cannot wait for your award, email the race director at secondwind5k@gmail.com and make arrangements to pick up your medal. Awards will not be mailed. All Kids Mini Sprint participants will receive a Finishers ribbon.

Will there be parking? Is it free?

Yes, parking is free. We encourage participants and spectators to park in Lot B, the north side of the fairgrounds. Overflow parking will be in Lot D.

Can I participate with a stroller?

Yes, but those with strollers must line up behind the other participants at the race start so faster runners are not tripped by the strollers. FYI, the course has a small portion over loose gravel and may slow you down a bit...if you are aiming to win!

    Can I bring my kids?

Yes! We encourage children to participate by registering for the 5K, all ages are welcome. Children 2-10 may register for the “Kids Mini Sprint”, a one lap race around Madera Speedway track, 1/3 mile. Kids Mini Sprint participants will receive all race amenities.

Babies or toddlers in stroller do not need to register.

No other children (non-bibbed) will be allowed on the course, but kids with supervising adults are welcome to cheer for you!

How long will the event last?

The Kids Mini Sprint will begin promptly at 7:30 and the 5K will begin promptly at 8 a.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 8:45 a.m., although some participants may still be on the course. The course will be closed at 9:15 a.m.

    Can walkers participate?

Yes! Runners and walkers are encouraged. If you know you will be walking some or all of the 3.1-mile course, we ask that you line up near the back at the starting line so you don't get trampled by faster runners.

    What if I'm too slow?

The course will be open for 1 hour and 15 minutes, allowing for a pace of 24 minutes per mile. If you do not reach the Quarter Midget Track by 9 a.m. you will be diverted to the finish line, cutting nearly 1/2 mile from the course. You can make it!

If I cannot participate, can I get a refund?

No. Consistent with all races, the Second Wind 5K will not offer a refund for race entry fees.

Is there a fee for spectators?

No. We encourage spectators to come and cheer on our runners and walkers!

    Are pets allowed?

No. No animals will be allowed on the race course nor in the Grand Stands.

Are bicycles allowed on the course?

    No.

How do I know if I'm registered?

Those who register will receive a confirmation email.

    Is there an age limit?

No! We encourage runners and walkers of all ages. Participants must pay the registration fee. Smaller children can be pushed in a stroller. No other children will be allowed on the course.

Will there be aid stations on the course?

There will be one "Pit Stop" near the halfway point of the course where volunteers will hand out water. Anyone in need of first aid can notify a Course Monitor/ Traffic Controller or other volunteer.

Can I listen to music with headphones while I run?

It's discouraged. There will be many participants in a relatively small space, and runners will run along a road that will only be partially closed to traffic. We want participants to be aware of their surroundings. There will also be a live band, a marching band, and a DJ along the course to provide music and motivation!

Is there a bag check available?

No. Please leave belongings with friends/family who will be watching the race, or locked securely in your vehicle's trunk.

    What happens when I finish?

Finishers will be directed to the Madera Speedway infield "Victory Circle" to refuel with water and snacks. Participants can then join their family and friends in the Grand Stands to eat and watch the rest of the race and the Awards Ceremony.

Will my family be allowed inside the Victory Circle?

Yes, once the race is underway, spectators can come into the infield.

What does my race fee support?

All race proceeds will benefit the Madera County Food Bank and Madera Rescue Mission.

I don't want to run or walk. Can I volunteer?

Yes! Volunteers are needed to help with packet pickup and registration, set-up and tear down on race day, course monitoring and controlling traffic, and water and snack distribution. email secondwind5k@gmail.com

Can I get volunteer hours signed off for school?

Yes. Our volunteer coordinator can fill out volunteer hour forms for community service requirements."

  • VOLUNTEERS

Parking Aid = help our participants "land their ship" in an orderly fashion prior to the RACE.

    Pit-Stop = water aid station

Packet Pick-Up = Friday, 3/24/17, participants will fill CROSSFIT THRIVE to gather their RACE DAY gear. We need help with set-up, serving up the gear and taking down the event.

PRE-RACE PROMO = It's a small crew that get the RACE out there. If you are willing and full of energy, contact us! We need help mobilizing.
